Teen to return to court for manslaughter
published: Friday | September 2, 2005

Tashieka Mair, Gleaner Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD RAINE Russell, who is charged with manslaughter, arising from the death of a Gleaner Company driver, 63-year-old Cedric Evangelist, will return to court on September 15.

The delay is due to some outstanding documents needed to allow the court to proceed with the case against him.

Raine, who is the son of former national tennis champion Richard Russell and the brother of current national tennis champion, Ryan Russell, was charged with manslaughter arising from the May 22 incident in which the Pajero he was driving collided with a Gleaner delivery truck, resulting in the death of Evangelist.

WALKING WITH CRUTCHES

In court yesterday, young Russell, who walked in on crutches, was told that outstanding documents relevant to the case were not ready. His $860,000 bail was extended, pending his next court appearance slated for September 15.

It is alleged that on Sunday, May 22, the deceased was on his way to Montego Bay from Kingston when on reaching the Coral Gardens Police Station, the accused, who was travelling in the opposite direction, swerved on the right side and slammed into the driver's side of the truck. The truck overturned, killing Mr. Evangelist on the spot.

Russell, who was seriously injured in the accident, was initially admitted to the MoBay Hope medical facility but was subsequently transferred to an overseas hospital. He was arrested on his return to the island.

Resident Magistrate Wilson Smith, who is presiding over the case, ordered that a subpoena be issued for the investigating officer, whose statement prevented the case from going ahead yesterday.
