Corporate Area teams to battle in semi showdown today
published: Sunday | September 4, 2005

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

ST. ANDREW and Kingston face off in the semi-finals of the Pepsi Under-15 football competition at the Sherwin Williams' Stadium in Duhaney Park at 4:00 p.m. today.

When the quarter-final round of the competition began early last month, many foresaw an all KSAFA final, but St. Catherine put an end to that when they topped Zone B one point ahead of St. Andrew.

EASY QUALIFYING FOR KINGSTON

This leaves Kingston and St. Andrew to battle each other for only one available spot in the final of the competition.

Kingston qualified for the semi-final round in relatively easy fashion. Not only were they undefeated in the last round but racked up an impressive 15 goals while only conceding three.

However, St. Andrew were no slouches in the last round either and they also fired in 15 goals but conceded one more than their colleagues now turned rivals. The teams recognised as twin parishes are in many respects mirror images of each other.

They both execute well, are defensively solid and up front, where Kingston have Tighana Thompson and St. Andrew boast Keithy Simpson, they can be lethal.

President of KSAFA Stewart Stephenson agrees.

"We have two evenly-balanced team and I wouldn't want to predict a winner. The teams are both cohesive and have a fair amount of experience coming from the Under 13 level," Stephenson said.

"But I am confident that whichever of the teams makes it to the final should be able to beat either Clarendon or St. Catherine even though the competition has been close," he said.

Kingston may be the team to go into today's fixture with a mental advantage of being undefeated, while St. Andrew not only drew a game against St Catherine but also had a crucial loss to them at the Spanish Town Prison Oval which put them in this predicament.
