Residents of Central Village, St. Catherine, man roadblocks during yesterday's islandwide JLP demonstrations. - JUNIOR DOWIE/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WANT to register my deep disappointment at Bruce Golding's decision to demonstrate today (Tuesday). Is this the new JLP? Looks like the worst style of the old JLP to me.
Many have spoken of the impact on business and schools. I sit now in my empty office, 50+ of our staff unable to make it to work without braving roadblocks.
There is another dimension that impacts me in a very personal way and that concerns health care. My wife faces a life-threatening illness and must start treatment early to avoid it spreading. Her appointment tomorrow to continue her treatment is now in jeopardy and those who had appointments today were likely frustrated. Patients receiving radiation therapy, dialysis, diagnostic imaging procedures, surgery, all have been put at hazard.
By what right does the JLP think it can have to so disrupt the lives of the people and put them at risk? If the people spontaneously demonstrate that is one thing; if a political party demonstrates it is quite another matter and it is inevitable that it will ignite opposition and open an opportunity for criminal elements to get involved.
As the alternative government, the JLP does not appear to understand the greater public good. As a parliamentary party, it should use Parliament to oppose the government and raise there the issues it is now taking to the streets.
I am, etc.,
Disappointed
