THE GLEANER Company has copped three of the five Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO)/ World Health Organi-sation (WHO) Awards for Excellence in health journalism.

The awards were presented yesterday at PAHO's downtown Kingston offices.

For the best health coverage, The Gleaner's year-long project 'Its Your Health, Take Control' was awarded the top spot, while the newspaper's Health Editor, Eulalee Thompson, was awarded for the 'best health page'.

Damion Mitchell of The Gleaner Power 106 News Centre was awarded with the Best Radio Feature for his documentary 'Murderous Rage'. This is the story of Janet Moore and her three children who were violently attacked by Wilfred Rhoden, the man who should be their protector.

All entries won by The Gleaner will move on to compete in the PAHO/WHO Regional Finals for Excellence in health journalism in Barbados in November.

Indi McLymont-Laffayette, formerly of the Jamaica Observer, won the best feature series in the print category for her article: 'I gave him sex, he gave me $1,000 and HIV/AIDS'. And Mrs. McLymont-Laffayette, shared with Olivia Campbell of the Observer the CARICOM Award for coverage of HIV/AIDS.
