Education for life

THE EDITOR, Sir:
ABUSE OF power at any level must not be tolerated. Care must be taken that we do not send the wrong messages to our children. If this is not done, our children will grow with fear, hate and anger instead of love. I am not a parent, but I do understand the complex role of proper parenting. We must look at our leaders in the light of day and whenever they fail us, we must recognise it for what it is.
Education should impart knowledge which prepares children for life. School curriculums must always remain a relevant living, thinking and serving part of the community to which it belongs. Education consists not only of the sum of what knowledge is acquired or learnt, or the skill with which the individual can put this to his/her advantage. Education must also be measured in terms of the soundness of the judgement of educators to appreciate the unique needs of their students and be of service to them by motivating them to optimise all their potential.
Educators should be sensitive to the environment in which they operate. Unless education is used as a vehicle for the betterment of humanity, I cannot see the reason for it. Our progress as a nation is derivative of our progress in education. Education must be geared toward making our society a better place by creating conditions to improve the quality of life and conditions for human happiness.
