THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT SEEMS that crime has taken its dark form into the community of Mona Heights. There has been a recent upsurge in robberies and car stealing. There has been some talk of gating the community, and I think it should be considered. It is obvious to everyone concerned that the police force is understaffed and under-equipped to assist all communities as they need to, and Mona Heights is no different.
We cannot fool ourselves, and think that crime will not affect us all one day. That would be 'like a man holding his breath and wondering why he is turning blue'. It is therefore imperative for the citizens of Mona Heights to consider gating their community. We have to take community protection into our own hands and stop waiting on the Government.
The argument might be made that there is a significant cost to buy the road from the state. But, what will be the cost if you lose your life? There are too many unscrupulous characters driving in and out of the community, as well as those on foot.
The powers that be need to open their eyes. The criminals are not sitting around anymore; they are barefaced and don't care whom they attack. Let us stand together and protect our community. Gate Mona Heights now.
I am, etc.,
