THE ONTARIO chapter of University of Technology's (UTech) alumni association has launched new scholarship awards for students in the province.

On Sunday, October 2, four university students - Kayla Stephenson, Giovanna Heron, Tameik Smith, and Leighton Watson - were recipients at the association's inaugural scholarship brunch at Club Paradise.

Stephenson, 18, is currently attending George Brown College and wants to become a social worker or a counsellor.

Heron, 19, is currently enrolled in a three-year certificate programme for environmental technology at Humber College. Smith, 20, who was not present to receive her scholarship, is in her second year of social service work in gerontology at Sheridan College.

The only male, 20-year-old Watson, is currently pursuing a general business diploma at Seneca College.

PROVIDING ASSISTANCE

In his address, Greg Allen, president of the alumni body, said CAST/UTech (the university was formerly called the College of Arts, Science and Technology) is committed to providing assistance to students in Ontario and also in Jamaica.

"We are planning to make this an annual award presentation and to build partnerships with organisations that will complement our fund-raising efforts to allow us to provide assistance to more students," he said.
