The Caymanians are here
published: Sunday | October 16, 2005

Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

THE DOVER Raceway in St. Ann will play host to three of Cayman's top drivers, at tomorrow's Invitational Grand Prix race meet, put on by the Jamaica Race Drivers' Club (JRDC).

According to the JRDC, the confirmed Caymanian drivers are Neil Johnson who will be driving a Evolution 6. There are also Andy Bodden and Gary 'Rambo' Bennett. They will both be competing in Honda Civic motor cars.

But while they will be making their debut in high spirit, the visitors can expect no special treatment on the track, from their local counterparts, which include many-time champion David Summerbell Jr., Tedroy Burton, Mark Creary, Peter Rae, Junior Barnes and the veteran Peter 'Bull' Thompson.

Up to Thursday afternoon, Trinidad and Tobago's top-rated driver, Daniel Ramtorsingh, looked a doubtful starter, as his Mitsubishi Evolution 6 racing car reportedly rolled and got damaged during a practice session at the track.

Despite the mishap, Summerbell anticipates an action-packed race meet and some tough challenges from his long-time rivals.

READY

"The cars have been prepared and I am ready," said Summerbell, who spoke with Automotive on Friday.

Although she has not raced at the track over the past year, Lisa Bowman-Lee will be returning.

"As we speak, we are putting the car together. We have done some improvement to it and are now hoping for the best," said Bowman-Lee, who is down to compete in the Improved and Modified Production classes.

Reports are that the 'Big Man' as he is referred to by some die-hard motor sport fans, 'Bull' Thompson, has been busy over the past week getting acclimatised to the track. He has been absent from the circuit since 1996.

Thompson has completed repairs to his RX7 Mazda, which he recently acquired from overseas. But while he is aware of the present talents on the track, Thompson said he has not seen any of the drivers in action, but had only heard about them.

Montego Bay-based Christopher 'Chippy' Addison, who returned to the island on Wednesday, said he would not be competing.

"I wanted to prepare my car for the meet, but I was away on a two-week training course, but I believe Junior Barnes will competing," said Addison.
