WESTERN BUREAU:
MELODY BAUGH, the 24-year-old Jamaican wife of murdered Finnish national, 53-year-old Dr. Timo Juhane Pellinen, is booked to appear in the the Falmouth Resident Magistrate's Court today after being charged in connection with his shooting death earlier this month.
Dr. Pellinen was shot on the Harmony Hall main road near Duncans, Trelawny, almost three weeks ago.
Ms. Baugh, a bar operator of 77 Lysson Road in St. Thomas, has been charged jointly with 30-year-old Marvin Stewart, a carpenter of Phillips Road in Lysson, whom police say is her lover.
"Circumstantial evidence led to the charges. I can't go into the specifics now but suffice to say that an intensive probe led us to the second person," said Inspector Clive Brown, acting crime chief for Trelawny, on Wednesday.
INITIAL STATEMENTS
Dr. Pellinen, a medical doctor of Helsinki, Finland, was gunned down on the night of October 1 on his way from the Sangster International Airport, where his wife of two years met him.
Ms. Baugh reportedly met her husband during a visit to England three years ago.
Initial statements suggested that the Finnish national was shot by a motorist with whom he had a minor motor vehicle accident.
Police reports were that about 10:30 p.m., Dr. Pellinen and his wife stopped on the Harmony Hall main road en route to Ocho Rios, St. Ann.
A car later drove up and hit the rear of the couple's vehicle. The other driver reportedly exited the vehicle to assess the damage and, after a brief conversation with the couple, an explosion was heard.
It was subsequently discovered that Dr. Pellinen had been shot. He died on the spot. His wife ran into bushes and fled unharmed. She later made a report to the police following which she was detained.
