Portmore, Melbourne series starts today
published: Saturday | October 22, 2005

JUNIOR STEWART AND ANDRE MCCARTHY

A PORTMORE Metropolitan Cricket team will begin a series of matches tomorrow against Capital & Credit all-island champions Melbourne at Bridgeport Sports Club in Portmore, St. Catherine.

Weather permitting, the 50-over per side contest is scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m.

Also included in the series of home- and-way matches are St. Catherine CC and St. Elizabeth. However, no dates have been set for the other matches.

Charles Simpson, president of the Portmore Metropolitan Cricket League, said the main purpose of the venture was to expose young players in the community to higher level cricket.

"Our mission is to reach the Super Cup and what we are doing now is to test the strength against Super League teams," Simpson said.

He noted that many players from Portmore were playing in the Super League for other teams. He also said some of those players would be used in the upcoming matches and the captains will be changed weekly.

Portmore team: Samuel Douglas (captain), Junior Stewart, Ryan Smith, Damion Foster, Colin Buchanan, Dean Court Wright, Starry Ricketts, Randy Carter, Brian Latore, Aleive McMally, Ferderick Hermitt, Garnett Morgan, Hugh Hinds, Dwight Williams, Milton Thomas, Peter Colquhoun and Michael Johnson.

Melbourne: Llewelyn Meggs (captain), Fitzroy Peterkin, Roman Hutchinson, Leon Bent, Sheldon Smith, Yanick Elliott, Andre McCarthy, Damion Jacobs, Carlton Baugh, Aubrey Wollaston, Damion Henry, Jason Nelson and Nikita Miller.
