Dialogue on crime
published: Thursday | November 3, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

OVER A number of years, I have listened to the various radio talk shows discussing the escalation of crime and violence in Jamaica. During these discussions, I have heard the views of intellectuals on the subject, such as Tony Harriot, Horace Levy, Wendel Abel, Trevor Munroe, Al Francis, et al. On no occasion have these brilliant minds put forward a credible reason why we have so much crime in our beloved country.

What I would like to hear these UWI graduates define is the reason why young babies, born in Jamaica with so much innocence, eventually grow up to become such cruel beasts as to commit the dastardly deeds we hear of from day to day.

In my mind, they are nurtured into ogres by the environment in which they are raised. Why is it that the babies born in Norbrook and Cherry Gardens do not normally trod these paths when they grow up?

Come on intellectuals, do something for your country in analysing this phenomenon and come up with some answers to this. Maybe Rear Admiral Lewin is right that there is a factory which creates these criminals and that's where we should look for our solutions.

I am, etc.,
