WESTERN BUREAU:
CHAMPIONS PORTMORE United moved up one place in the 2005-06 Wray and Nephew National Premier League standings on Sunday night, when a second-half strike by Ashane Murray carried them to a 1-0 win over struggling Seba United at Jarrett Park, in Montego Bay.
"It was a disciplined performance by my team. Seba United took the fight to us but we never lost our composure and basically stuck to the game plan," said Portmore's coach Paul Young. "Taking three points on the road is the ultimate aim of every travelling team so needless to say, we are extremely pleased with this result."
For Seba United, whose regular coach Paul 'Tegat' Davis is said to have taken a one-month sabbatical from the team, it was yet another heart-breaking performance as they again created numerous chances, especially through Wilfred Smith, but continue to be plagued by faulty finishing.
FINISHING A SORE POINT
"We again played well and created the chances but our finishing continues to be a sore point," said stand-in coach Heron 'Sheriff' Grey, who has a Brazilian coaching certificate. "We are experimenting with a new system and hopefully that will settle our goalscoring problems."
They got glorious scoring opportunities in the second and ninth minutes but both were squandered as Iton Scott fired over the crossbar from 12 yards and Smith missed the first of at least four clear chances.
Portmore struck within seconds on the resumption of the second half. Murray on a smart break before Seba United goal, threw himself into the path of a cross and helped the ball across the goal line, making the score 1-0.
Having taken the lead, Portmore took command, running Seba United ragged with their aggressive front-line play.
