SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:
POLICEMEN SWARMED the precincts of the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday morning following threats by thugs on Monday to kill two judges.
Yesterday, a Gleaner news team observed several heavily-armed uniformed and plainclothes police personnel guarding the court. Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar-Gayle was also escorted into the court building by several lawmen.
METAL DETECTORS
The police used a metal detector to search persons as they beefed up security arrangements in response to the threats.
Previously, there had been no detectors at the courthouse.
On Monday, court had to be adjourned as early as noon after men called the court offices threatening to kill a judge and disrupt proceedings. Cases were called up and then postponed.
According to Detective Sergeant Paul Thomas, officer in charge of crime for the Spanish Town Police Station, the police will "continue to resensitise the staff to the problem that exists at the court and will continue to monitor the situation and maintain a visible presence to protect the public and those who work there."
