THE SCHOOL of Medical Radiation Technology at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) is to offer a degree programme in diagnostic radiology.
The unit, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, is a regional training institution which trains students in diagnostic radiography, medical diagnostic ultrasonography at the diploma level, and dark room technology at the certificate level.
Joan Shaw, director of the School of Medical Radiation, said that the institution is also expanding and will be providing training in other imaging areas.
Mrs. Shaw said the school is registered by the University Council of Jamaica and graduates are trained to internationally accepted standards, which equip them for clinical practice worldwide.
Thirty-six students graduated from the school this year. Mrs. Shaw noted that the numbers are not enough to fill the gap that exists in radiology facilities across the island, but noted that the institution can only train a limited number of students each year.
As part of its 40th anniversary, the unit will host an open day today, and a dinner at the end of the month.
