ONE MAN was shot and killed during an alleged shootout with the police last Friday. Three illegal guns were also recovered in separate incidents as the police stepped up operations in the St. Catherine North division.

In the first incident, at 10:00 p.m. on Friday the police went on an operation in Valdez Road area of Homestead and, during the search of a premises, one AK47 rifle, along with a magazine and five rounds was seized. No one was held in connection with this find.

About an hour later, the police went to St. Johns Heights when they were allegedly shot at by a man armed with a .38 revolver. During a shootout, the man, who was still unidentified up to press time last night, was shot and killed. The police recovered the gun along with two spent shells and four live rounds.

The police went to the Monticello area at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and during the search of a premises, a Tec 9 submachine gun was found. No one was held in connection with this find.

According to Detective Sergeant Paul Thomas, officer in charge of crime for Spanish Town, in recent weeks the police have been reaping success in the fight against illegal guns. Over a two-week period, 10 firearms have been seized. He said the lawmen will be continuing their drive to rid communities of illegal guns.

The police have recovered 75 guns since the start of the year.
