GURNANI
Pooja Gurnani gets the award in the category of Education.
IMAGINE OUTPERFORMING nearly 50,000 students in the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT). Of course that would be great, but imagine walking away with the Bank of Nova Scotia award for the highest-performing girl in the island, just to top it off.
Think it cannot happen? Well, meet Pooja Gurnani of Mt. Alvernia High School in St. James.
"I am still very thrilled about my performance. I am settling in at high school now and I have made my parents and everybody proud," Pooja told The Gleaner.
EYEING OPHTHALMOLOGY
A former student of Mt. Alvernia Preparatory School, Pooja is eyeing a career in ophthalmology because she learnt about the eye while she was in grade six and was fascinated by it. She also wants to become a fashion designer because she enjoys designing clothes.
The elder of two children, born to parents Rajesh and Anju Gurnani, Pooja is involved in the key club at her school.
Pooja will receive The Gleaner Honour Award for Education.
"I've heard that the Governor-General will be there (at the awards ceremony) and I feel very thrilled and I am looking forward to being honoured by The Gleaner Company," she said with excitement in her voice.
