COP-BEATING CASE
Constable held responsible

published: Sunday | November 27, 2005

Nagra Plunkett, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU-

A police constable has been implicated in the alleged beating of 48- year-old Corporal Grantley Waite at the barracks of the Mount Salem Police Station last Tuesday.

"We have since found out it was one person and not a group as previously perceived," Superin-tendent Warren Clarke, commanding officer for the St. James Police Division said yesterday.

"The corporal was assessed as an intruder as he was not identified and the constable was responding to calls for help by two female station cleaners."

It has been suggested that Cpl. Waite startled the females when he entered the barracks and went into the refrigerator. There was a subsequent conversation and the women screamed.

"The policeman responded and challenged the perceived intruder who resisted. During the exchange, the corporal reportedly tripped backways and fell down a five-foot flight of stairs," Supt. Clarke concluded.

He, however, declined to release the identity of the constable and only stated that he was only accommodated at the barracks and was not attached to the Mount Salem station or the St. James Police Divison. At the time of the incident, Cpl. Waite was in Green Island, Hanover, on a 10-day sick leave stay.
