The Woodburns extend 'Circle of Love' in Cobbla
published: Saturday | December 3, 2005

Byron McDaniel, Gleaner Writer

OVER 300 children aged five to 12 years from Cobbla in Manchester were guests of the Woodburn family recently at a 'Circle of Love' festival on Saturday, November 19.

The Woodburns are retired professionals from Cobbla, and reside in the United States. Each year, they return to give back to the community of their birth by motivating the youth.

"The reason for this annual festival is because I recall my days as a child in Cobbla and realise that a good impression to children last. Therefore in giving back to the community, the youths are targeted," said retired banker Monica Watson née Woodburn.

William Woodburn, also a retired banker, said his sister Monica conceived the festival and now the extended family at home and abroad has joined in the effort.

"Our ultimate goal is to extend the 'Circle of Love' fun day into a neighbourhood outreach programme. Our satisfaction is to see the children interract without hostility," he said.

The extended Woodburn family includes the Browns, the Watsons and Lindseys. The dynamo behind the initiative is Nurse Grace Bennett an active Kiwanian.

The 11:00 a.m to 6.30 p.m function featured prayers, raffle tickets, snacks, dinner and desserts. Each child received a gift package of personal and school items.

Dermot Johnson, a student of Knox College entertained on keyboard. All participants wore blue shirts with a 'Circle of Love' logo provided by the host.
