Windies end tour on a losing note
published: Saturday | December 3, 2005

CANBERRA, Australia CMC:

THE WEST Indies lost the final match of their Australian tour yesterday when they went down by six runs on the Duckworth Lewis system, to the Prime Minister's XI at the Manuka Oval.

The home side, behind half centuries from Adam Voges and Callum Ferguson, amassed 316 for four in their 50 allotted overs and the West Indies had reached 174 for three when torrential rain ended the game in the 32nd over.

Right-handed batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan led the West Indies run chase with 90 from 72 balls, including nine fours while Dwayne Bravo was unbeaten on 52 from 66 balls.

Sarwan and Bravo shared a crucial third wicket stand of 115 after the West Indies had slipped to 25 for two, with openers Devon Smith (4) and Denesh Ramdin (5), falling cheaply.

When Sarwan was caught on the deep mid-wicket boundary off spinner Chris Simpson, Brian Lara (13 not out) joined Bravo to add a further 34 for the fourth wicket.

SPOT OF BOTHER

Earlier, Voges and Ferguson steadied the Prime Minister XI's innings after they had found themselves in a spot of bother at one stage.

Voges smashed 91 from 104 balls with three fours and two sixes while Ferguson's unbeaten 70 came from 61 balls from eight fours.

Stumbling at 57 for two, David Dawson (41) added 79 for the third with Voges before falling to a catch at the wicket off pacer Jermaine Lawson with the score at 138. But there was not be any further immediate success for the West Indies as Ferguson joined Voges to post 132 runs for the fourth wicket.

Both players attacked the West Indies bowlers and were particularly severe on Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dwayne Smith, both of whom were expensive. When Voges was out with the score on 268, captain Justin Langer flayed 37 from 18 balls to sustain the momentum.
