Don't give criminals prominence in the news, says Northern Caribbean University president
published: Monday | December 12, 2005

THOMPSON

DR. HERBERT Thompson, president of the Northern Caribbean University (NCU) has charged the media to be more responsible in reporting what he calls sensitive stories.

"Our lead stories and front page news should not be the ones with the murders, rape and other uninspiring and discouraging news, which show the worst side of us as a nation," he said.

THE WORLD IS WATCHING

"We need to realise, that it is the lead story that individuals and wire services around the world take their lead stories from," Dr. Thompson added.

The NCU president also said that the media should move away from giving criminals prominence in the news.

The media, he said should strike a balance by highlighting positive aspects of the society.

Dr. Thompson was speaking on Saturday at the launch of BLESS TV, at the Portmore Seventh-day Adventist Church.

BLESS TV is a faith-based cable network operated by the Adventist churches in Portmore, St. Catherine.

The NCU president also challenged BLESS TV to be a station "without violence, loose morals, sexual immorality, political skewness or condemnation of other religions".
