Outdated IT syllabus
published: Thursday | December 15, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM a concerned parent trying to find out why is it that in some high schools the syllabus for information technology has not been updated. I am an IT professional and when I look at my son's computer work, I am annoyed to know that they are teaching students obsolete information.

Based on my experience in the field, computers are changing daily, therefore, there is always new technology. Therefore, I don't see why my son needs to learn about software and operating systems dating back to the 80s. Learning about the history of computing is great but to go indepth about technology that is no longer compatible with anything anymore is total nonsense. I think an update is way overdue because when students are coming home asking to use MS-DOS on Windows XP to create a folder, I think that is
utterly ridiculous.

I am, etc.,
