ADRIAN FORBES slammed in 33 points and snatched 31 rebounds as St. Jago High demolished Meadowbrook 51-36, pushing them to a perfect 5-0 start to the 2005 KFC-sponsored ISSA High Schools Basketball season.
For Meadowbrook, it was a tale of two halves. Judging by the low-scoring 16-16 total at half-time it had promised to be a close game.
St. Jago ran off to a 2-0 start but as they would for most of the first half Meadowbrook would stay close and at the end of the first quarter they trailed by a narrow 12-14 deficit. Both teams shot miserably in the second quarter, but the third quarter would be where the game got away from the homesters.
"Some of the players were having a problem with the wet court and so they were slipping, that was a part of the problem in the first half. We changed some sneakers before coming out in the second half," explained St. Jago coach Kevin Grossett.
They went to a dominant Forbes on the inside immediately and he scored three straight baskets to add to eight first-half points and 18 rebounds. On the boards it was no contest and with no answer for Forbes in the post, St. Jago easily stretched their lead to a 32-25 lead by the end of the third.
Already facing a deficit, the fourth proved to be no contest and with no answers for Forbes, St. Jago easily continued to extend their lead.
"It was a mixture of being unfit and missing a couple of practice sessions. We're not there right now physically or mentally but we will work on it," said Meadowbrook coach Greig Smith. Meadowbrook now fall to a 1-3 record.
In the junior match, St. Jago also won, 36-34.
