THE JAMAICA Defence Force (JDF) beat Rae Town 1-0 at Breezy Castle, downtown Kingston as action continued in the Jamaica National/Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Super League yesterday.
Terrence Jarrett, who led the Soldiers, got the all-important goal on 63 minutes. The win pushed JDF to eight points from five games while Rae Town remain grounded on four points.
Meanwhile, August Town remain atop the 12-team league after playing to a 1-1 draw with Mountain View at the UWI Bowl. August Town are on 12 points from six games, a point ahead of Police National, Santos and Manchester. Former champions Santos beat Police 3-0 at Constant Spring, Meadhaven tagged Bull Bay 3-0 at Campion College, while Maverley/ Hughenden and Barbican drew 0-0 at Maverley.
At Breezy Castle, the homesters created three clear-cut chances but failed to score, even when presented with one-on-one opportunities with the goalkeeper. The most guilty of their players was Mark Williams who broke into the box a minute from time and with the goalkeeper to beat, managed only to role the ball to the custodian.
GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY MISSED
It was not a one-way stream though. Jarrett missed out on a golden opportunity of scoring at least a brace. Faced with just the keeper to beat, he twice fired wide from inside the box. JDF's Andre Redwood was denied by the woodwork in the fifth minute after his shot seemingly held up in the breeze and deceived goalkeeper Andrew Martin.
Martin, though, was forced to pull of a beauty in the 85th minute when a Mark Miller free kick threatened to rip the roof off his net.
JDF's assistant coach, Donavan Dennison, was happy with the win despite his team scoring only one goal.
"It's the goal that counts and it means three points and these points will no doubt help up to close the gap on the leaders," Dennison said.
Meanwhile, a disappointed Percival Cordwell, Rae Town's technical director, said were it not for faulty shooting, his team would have won.
"We had at least three clear opportunities to score and we never made use. It's a lesson we have to learn. When you don't take your chances, you lose," he said.
