Young impressed by Lowe
published: Wednesday | December 21, 2005

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

SO FAR so good has been the response of Portmore United coach Paul Young to the signing of former national striker Onandi Lowe.

According to Young and Port-more United, who announced the signing of Lowe on Monday, the striker is raring to go.

"We had a meeting yesterday (Monday) and he said he was in training on the sands. When he came to training this morning (yesterday) he looked very fluent. He looked slim and sharp and it's just now left to see him in a match situation," said Young.

VERY PLEASED

"I am very pleased with what I have seen so far," he said.

Apart from the 31-year-old's obvious talent, there have also been questions about his effect on the stability of a team.

Lowe was a part of the Arnett Gardens outfit towards the end of the 2004-05 season of the Wray and Nephew National Premier League and was at the heart of rumours and speculation about training ethics and loyalty to the welfare of the club before he was ousted.

Even though it is too early to tell, Young thinks that won't be a problem for the ace striker at Portmore.

"The senior players were quite jovial around him and they were laughing and talking. He's a professional and we spoke at length about what his goals were. All talented players come in for some controversy," Young said.

"If you look at Eric Cantona, he was rejected by clubs in his home country and became a big star for Manchester United. Sometime it's about being in the right team and around the right people," said Young.

Lowe, who had his request to become a part of the Portmore unit put on hold because of the club's financial problems, inked his contract, thanks to the intervention of Captain Horace Burrell.

Burrell has taken on the task of, through his franchise, the Captain's Bakery, sponsoring the contract for the next two years.

CHALLENGING CIRCUMSTANCES

"Onandi in recent times has been experiencing very challenging circumstances in his personal and professional life. I believe he deserves an opportunity to get his life together once again and put the misfortunes that he has experienced firmly behind him," said Burrell in a press release .

As for Lowe, he has indicated that the opportunity is one which he is grateful for.

"I have been out of the game for quite a while and I am very excited at the prospect of resuming my career," he said.
