SUPERVISORY AND technical workers at the St. Ann Bauxite Company, formerly Kaiser, have remained off the job for a second day and are uncertain as to when they will resume work.Since Thursday, the more than 60 workers stopped working to protest against the non-payment of increased wages by the company's management.
General secretary of the Union of Technical and Supervisory Personnel, (UTASP) St. Patrice Ennis said the management of the company has still not agreed to increase its wage offer.
As a result, he said, the workers cannot guarantee normality at the company next week. "The initial plan was for a two-day protest or sick-out. There has been no firm arrangement to continue after midnight (last night). We expect the action to continue next week when they will be protesting in a similar manner," he said.
AMONG THE WORST PAID
According to Mr. Ennis, the workers at the St. Ann Bauxite Company are among the worst paid in the industry.
In the meantime, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security said it has been monitoring the situation and will intervene if the workers fail to return to work by next Tuesday.
