THE EDITOR, Sir:THE VEXING problem of travel on the road these days calls for some serious plans to be made for traffic management during this festive season. Routinely, vehicles are annoyingly delayed on the Mount Rosser hill.
Most of my trips in and out of Kingston have been interrupted by huge haulers that have difficulty passing other trucks around the corners and get stuck, blocking traffic in both directions. These delays cause tempers to flare, and the use of a lot of petrol which we can ill afford.
I wish to make the following suggestions to the Minister of Transport, the Hon. Robert Pickersgill:
Have dialogue with the haulage contractors and drivers of all 18-wheeler trucks. Suggest to them to do their long-distance haulage between the hours of 12 midnight and 5:00 a.m., and to use the south coast route when practical.During the month of December, have government offices open between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. This would greatly reduce the congestion on the Corporate Area roads and facilitate public transactionsFor a long time there has been a lot of talk about this problem, but all it has been is just that 'TALK'. It is time for serious decisions. Over to you, Bobby.
I am, etc.,
