PATTERSON
OUTGOING PRIME Minister P.J. Patterson is urging Jamaicans to identify issues that can unite us all in 2006.
In his New Year's message, the Prime Minister said citizens should carefully consider the effects of their action on their families, communities, and the country.
"We have achieved much in the past year, but further conquests still lie ahead," Mr. Patterson stated. He said there were no instant solutions to the country's problems, but he noted that tasks could be accomplished through hard work and divine guidance.
Mr. Patterson added there have been gains in the economy, with Jamaica enjoying the largest levels of investment since the 1950s.
He noted, however, that crime was undoubtedly the country's most pressing problem. Mr. Patterson added that several crime-fighting measures implemented were already showing encouraging results.
"I strongly urge every citizen who has valuable information to come forward and play his or her part in a struggle that requires the total commitment of every Jamaican," the Prime Minister stated.
With less than three months to ago before demitting office, Mr. Patterson said he was confident Jamaicans were able to confront the challenges of the future with the good sense they have displayed during his 40 years in public life.
Acknowledging there were many tough issues and hard choices during his tenure, the Prime Minister said he was satisfied he had been guided by Christian beliefs, decency and respect for others.
