Christians and Christmas

THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE SEASON of Advent or Christmas is celebrated by Christians all over the world and recognised as the time to commemorate Christ's birth. However, as innocent as these celebrations seem it is viewed by persons as not only irrelevant but not sanctified by the scriptures, and therefore should not be celebrated. It is so unfortunate that there are Christians who support this sad belief.
There are many things we do in our churches that were never mentioned in the Bible, and yet they are to the glory of his name. If one calls himself or herself a Christian, or a believer, how can you object to the celebration of the first coming of your saviour?
Why do we need permission from the scriptures to commemorate Christ's birth? In Easter we celebrate his death and resurrection. However, you object to the celebration of his first coming and the fulfilment of prophecies. This is preposterous. It would be understandable to debate the ways in which it has been commercialised but, any God-fearing christian who believes in John 3:16, wouldn't continue to share such an ignorant and ridiculous belief. You believe in his birth and the promise of salvation but you cannot celebrate it?!
