LAMEY
HARBOUR VIEW gave up a glorious chance of virtually wrapping up the league by conceding a last minute goal to draw 2-2 with nearest rivals Waterhouse in their Wray and Nephew National Premier League (NPL) game at Drewsland yesterday.
Loxley Thomas gave the visitors the lead in the 42nd minute but substitute Kevin Lamey equalised for Waterhouse in the 60th, before Luton Shelton's 80th minute header seemed to secure maximum points for Harbour View.
But once again, the ever dangerous Lamey popped up in the 90th minute to score an overhead kick with basically the last kick of the game to level the scores at 2-2.
Harbour View, with their second consecutive draw following a 1-1 midweek result at Rivoli, move to 50 points, still holding a massive lead of 11 points ahead of the second-placed team Waterhouse on 39.
Village, the third placed team are a further six points behind on 33, a whopping 17 points behind Harbour View.
OUT THE WINDOW
So livid was Donovan Hayles, coach of Harbour View, after the game, that the normally pleasant character was thrown out the window because of the way his team conceded the equaliser, as he refused to talk to the media.
However, his assistant Barrington Gaynor said it's always a bitter feeling whenever you give up points.
"We gave up the game by giving up a soft goal at the end. I thought we could have scored at least three other chances but such is the game. But we are still 11 points ahead of them and hopefully we can hold that to the end. That's what is important," said Gaynor.
Meanwhile Wayne Fairclough, coach of Waterhouse, was more satisfied with the result after staring defeat in face.
"I am mighty grateful that we could come back and show character. Poor tracking and marking allowed a linkman to score on us. The second half, another poor defensive ploy and they scored against the run of play. Basically we gave up two soft goals," he said.
As for his two-goal hero Lamey, Fairclough said it was the exact tactics that he planned bear fruits.
"That was our plan because sometimes he tires in the last 25 minutes of the games. The thinking is that if we take him from the bench he'll give us a better game when the legs of the opponents are tired. But he can start, he has what it takes to start," he added.
