LETTER OF THE DAY :
A dangerous bus driver

published: Saturday | January 7, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

I am writing to forewarn motorists of the dangers that await them on the roads in the form of the Jamaica Urban Transit Corporation (JUTC) drivers.

I was heading home from Kingston on Friday, December 30, 2005. Upon reaching the vicinity of the Ferry Police Station, a JUTC bus, licensed PA9187, which plies the Spanish Town to downtown Kingston route (Number 22), tried to run me off the road. There was traffic on the road, but this particular driver decided he should and could not wait.

The bus was in the right lane and I'm quite sure that they should remain in the left lane, since they have to stop at bus stops. The driver decided to drive up close to the back of my car and blow me until I got scared and gave him way.

Realising that this tactic was not working, he did the same thing to two other vehicles and was successful. Upon reaching the stoplights on Mandela Highway, the driver stopped in mid-traffic just to make sure he could be window-to-window with me. He told me some choice words and warned me, "Hey gal, look pon me good. Me'll kill you ?@#$%^! Nuh ramp wid mi."

I have to ask, what kind of bus drivers are transporting us, using our roads? Have we come to this, that if the drivers do not get their way, they'll harm us?

If the drivers are using the buses as weapons, then we ought to be afraid. Our very lives are at stake.

I am, etc.,

SHAUNETTE JONES
