Identify the artist

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM Basil Watson, the artist who did the Merlene Ottey sculpture, and while I am pleased that it has made the newspaper headlines, I must express my dissappointment with the level of journalistic professionalism and lack of thoroughness.
I have been inundated with questions as to the identity of the artist because nowhere in the article is it mentioned. The queries seem to indicate that the identity of the artist is of interest to the general public. I would also think that recognition is due to the artist responsible for creating what we hope will become a public icon, an inspiration for the Jamaican people in the realm of sporting and artistic excellence.
This is not an isolated occurrence, as I have seen over the years so often art work is featured in your newspaper without due credit to the artist. Our art is a national treasure and it is the responsibility of the media to help make sure that this is recognised. More needs to be done!
I am, etc.,
BASIL WATSON
