Gayle, Hinds for West Indies Board/UWI leadership seminar
published: Wednesday | January 11, 2006

( L - R ) GAYLE AND HINDS

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua CMC:

SEVEN WEST Indies players will undergo a leadership training seminar, staged by the West Indies Cricket Board in conjunction with the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus.

The batch of players, identified by the regional selectors as having leadership qualities is led by captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and includes his deputy Ramnaresh Sarwan, Chris Gayle, Daren Ganga, Wavell Hinds, Sylvester Joseph and Denesh Ramdin.

Former captain Brian Lara was also invited to the seminar, but was unavailable.

"Since leadership is about the pursuit of excellence, persons who have achieved excellence would be critical components of any training programme; though the leader need not have attained excellence, it is important that the leader knows what it is and tries to help others attain it," Professor Hilary Beckles, principal of the UWI Cave Hill campus, said.

Beckles also expressed confidence that the leadership training programme as designed would provide a sound foundation and ensure that the WICB was preparing leaders for the future.

The programme, scheduled to run from January 17-19 at the CLR James Centre for Cricket Research, will cover topics including 'Understanding the essentials of leadership', 'Leadership styles in practice', 'Leadership and high performance teams', 'Communication and inspiration', 'Conflict management' and 'Personal development action'.

The workshop will be governed by the two themes, Leadership and West Indian nation-building in the 21st century and Leadership and corporate globalisation.
