ADAMS
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):
THE WEST Indies Cricket Board (WICB) yesterday named former West Indies captain Jimmy Adams as the new manager of the West Indies Under-19 team for the upcoming International Cricket Council's Youth World Cup.
Zorol Barthley, cricket operations manager of the WICB, confirmed the appointment.
"We have appointed Jimmy because of his leadership skills and knowledge of the game and what goes on within the game," Barthley said.
Adams, who turned 38 on Monday, takes over from Roger Harper who stepped down last week to be coach of Kenya.
Adams' first role will be to oversee the five-day camp at the Cricket Development Center in Couva, Trinidad, which starts today.
"I'm excited about the role and I'm happy to serve West Indies cricket again," Adams said.
"I am excited to work with the boys and help to guide the next generation of West Indies cricketers."
In his playing career Adams was a stubborn left-handed batsman and left-arm spinner who played 54 Test matches and 127 One-Day Internationals between 1992 and 2001.
After the camp in Trinidad, the West Indies team will leave the region next Sunday to play five matches against Pakistan's Under-19s before heading to Sri Lanka for the tournament, which will be played from February 5-19.
