Spring move off the bottom

CONSTANT SPRING F.C hungrily snatched their second win of the season when they narrowly clipped third placed Village United 2-1 at the Constant Spring Complex yesterday in the Wray and Nephew National Premier League.

The win, in addition to boosting Constant Spring spirits, now sees them move into 11th place on 16 points, one above Rivoli United who now occupy the bottom spot but take on Wadadah later today at Jarrett Park.

With the game already one minute plus into time added on, Constant Spring seemed headed to an all too familiar conclusion. However, busy front man Cezray Twyne had other ideas.

Only seconds remained in stoppage time when he picked up the ball from a free-kick, spun away from his defender and booted a fierce right-footed shot from about 18 yards to comprehensively beat a fully stretched Village custodian Elvis Hart, delighting the Spring faithful and giving the team all three points for only the second time all season.

"We played good football for about 70 minutes overall but truth be told, we deserved the victory, we created more chances and we should have put it away a long time ago. In the end the three points is a very welcome situation for us," was the assessment of Constant Spring coach Maurice "Danny" Lyn.

MADE NO MISTAKE

In fact, it was the home team that took the early lead through Gaymeon Watkins. Watkins, lurking at the back post, was the recipient of a well weighted, floating Shawn Hunter cross, from which he made no mistake in unleashing a one-time volley, to fire his team into a 13th minute lead.

However, the dangerous Fabian Dawkins had proved to be a handful from the opening whistle and it seemed only a matter of time before he got his name on the scoresheet.

Thirteen minutes after Constant Spring struck, the league's top scorer picked up the ball 18 yards out, wove his way between three defenders and easily rounded Constant Spring custodian Ralston Robinson, before scoring to pull his team level despite being muscled to the ground. While the first half proved to be equal, Constant Spring were more dominant in the second half and Village seemed to go flat.

"We lost our shape both offensively and defensively. In doing that in the dying moments the legs are weary and the brain falls asleep and we paid dearly for that today," remarked Village coach Dr. Dean Weatherly.

Despite ending the second round with a draw and a loss he remains positive.

GOALSHEET

Constant Spring 2

Gaymeon Watkins, 13th, Cezray Twyne, 90+

Village United 1

Fabian Dawkins, 26th
