Bruce Blagrove, a third year medical student in the faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies (UWI), has been awarded the 2005 Bustamante Scholarship.
Blagrove said he was happy at receiving the scholarship.
"Well, I was very happy because the money I receive is going to do a lot of things, for example, financing my education. I will also use it to pay for my accommodation and books," said Blagrove.
The Bustamante Foundation was founded in 1969 when Sir Alexander Bustamante was made a national hero. After funds were raised in Jamaica, the United Kingdom, United States of America and Canada, Sir Alexander Bustamante was asked what should be done about the money that was raised. He insisted that the funds raised should be used to award scholarships to assist Jamaican students gain university qualifications, particularly in medicine and dentistry.
Bruce Blagrove, who grew up in Priory, St. Ann, and attended York Castle and St. Jago high schools, was selected from a field of over 80 qualified applicants. At UWI he participates in Quality Leadership and Circle K. He also likes to play basketball.
specialisation
On completion of his undergraduate studies he plans to specialise in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology. Blagrove said he chose the field of medicine as he wanted to help people and he was always interested in science.
The foundation also granted a special bursary to Nickecia Campbell, a final year medical student at U.W.I. "Well, I thought it was nothing short of a blessing. At the time I did not know where the money was coming from. It came in time to help me with my tuition fees," said Campbell.
She attended Camperdown High School, then entered UWI to pursue her first degree in biochemistry and zoology, later entering the medical faculty.
Since 1970, the Bustamante Foundation has awarded some 60 scholarships and bursaries to students.
