Phillips launches campaign
published: Sunday | January 15, 2006

Minister of National Security, Dr. Peter Phillips, will officially launch the last leg of his campaign for People's National Party (PNP) president this afternoon at the National Arena.

Dr. Phillips and Local Government, Community Development and Sports Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, are considered the leading candidates to succeed P.J. Patterson as PNP leader and Prime Minister of Jamaica.

Finance Minister, Omar Davies, and former Water and Housing Minister, Dr. Karl Blythe, are the other contestants for the post.

Last Wednesday, Maxine Henry-Wilson, manager for the Phillips campaign, predicted a comfortable victory for her candidate who she said had the overwhelming support of the PNP's 3,400 delegates.

She said a poll done by her team two weeks ago, showed that Dr. Phillips was assured of 2,611 votes. In addition, she spoke of the support he has from 24 Members of Parliament and senators, the PNP's women's movement, its youth arm and councillors.

She said details of Dr. Phillips' road campaign would be disclosed today.
