Jamaica face uphill task in Barbados
published: Sunday | January 15, 2006

Jerome Taylor ... bagged five for 85.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

Consistent batting right down the order helped Barbados to a 290-run, first innings lead in their Carib Beer Series match against Jamaica yesterday at the Three Ws Oval.

Dwayne Smith top-scored with 94, opening batsman Dale Richards and captain Ryan Hinds scored 78, and Alcindo Holder supported with an unbeaten 64 to lead the Barbadians to 419, replying to Jamaica's first innings total of 129.

Jerome Taylor was the pick of the Jamaican bowlers with five wickets for 85 runs from 23 overs, and Tamar Lambert snared two for 29 from 6.2 overs of uncomplicated off-spin.

In the three overs before stumps were drawn on the second day, Jamaica reached 11 without loss in their second innings.

Smith, however, provided the most pyrotechnics in a thrilling knock that contained half-dozen fours and sixes from 63 balls in 90 minutes. He added 98 for the fourth wicket with Hinds and offered the Jamaicans no less than five chances to claim his wicket.

dropped

Early in his innings, Smith was dropped by wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh, Jr., off Marlon Samuels, before living a charmed life after completing his 50 with a drive to wide long-off for two.

Gareth Breese dropped Smith on 58 at deep mid wicket off Jerome Taylor, Nikita Miller on the deep mid wicket boundary completely misjudged the flight of a ball that he pulled off Samuels, the same bowler who suffered when slip fielder Brenton Parchment missed Smith on 80, and the same score on which Baugh running to square leg dropped Smith off Taylor.

Smith played an array of his typically robust strokes, particularly through the leg-side, where he is strongest, and where he clobbered four sixes early in his innings off Miller and Taylor.

There was a great moan from the crowd that swelled during Smith's rampage when he drove at a full length ball from Taylor and was bowled in the middle of the afternoon period.

Richards and Hinds, however, had set the Barbadians up, after the home team continued from their bedtime position of 102 for two. The two batsmen added 106 for the third wicket.

Miller made the breakthrough, when Richards, who struck seven fours from 174 balls in just over three hours 30 minutes, was caught at long-on off Miller to leave the Barbadians on 157 for three.

Smith joined Hinds at the wicket and marauded the Jamaica bowling to catapult Barbados 218 for three at the lunch interval.

On the back of some purposeful bowling from Taylor, the period between lunch and tea was a purple patch for the visitors, as they restricted the Barbadians to 312 for seven.

breakthrough

Taylor made the breakthrough after lunch, when Hinds was bowled, after striking eight fours from 187 balls in three hours 15 minutes to leave Barbados on 255 for four.

Taylor next gained an lbw verdict to send Floyd Reifer packing for 11, before he claimed Smith and then Ian Bradshaw lbw for a duck in quick succession as Barbados slid to 288 for seven.

After tea, Andrew Richardson set Barbados back when Ryan Nurse was caught at mid-on for 25, but a stand of 89 between Holder and Ryan Austin for the ninth wicket deflated the Jamaicans.

Austin spent close to 90 minutes at the crease for 31, before he was adjudged lbw to Lambert, the same bowler that claimed Fidel Edwards stumped for four to bring the innings to a close.

Both Barbados and Jamaica are tied on 12 points, and both will be looking for victory to cement themselves in second position in the championship behind front-runners Trinidad & Tobago.
