The upward movement of women
published: Monday | January 16, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

FROM HELPERS and housewives, to house owners, conductresses and passengers, to drivers and bus owners; from secretaries, baby-sitters, higglers, receptionists etc to contractors, managing directors, mason, pharmacists, civil engineers, soldiers, etc. women have risen to the occasion, stepping out of the stereotype shell, achieving the unthinkable daily, pressing to higher heights of success.

There is now almost no 'man job' because the 'weaker sex' has shown that they can do it too! The society is forcefully moving from one of male dominance to one more equality-driven. This is due not to men wanting the playing field to be level, but through hard working female lobby groups, domestic workers, etc., not sitting complacently and watching things happen, but making it happen.

WILLING TO TRY NEW THINGS

Women are now, more than ever, willing to try new things, willing to explore, willing to take risks, willing to stand up and be counted. There are more male prisons than there are female and, on the other hand, more females enrolled in the universities than there are males (in Jamaica). This is cause for concern for the males and thumbs up for the females.

The women are not waiting for their independence to come, they are passionately hunting it down, leaving nothing to chance, leaving no stones unturned. Women have raised the bar, attained the highest and are now as competitive as ever with their male counterparts. Women, mothers, caregivers keep striving.

I am, etc.,
