LUCEA, Hanover:
HANOVER PARISH councillors have again blasted the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) for what they said was the agency's substandard service in the parish's major towns.
The councillors vented their anger in last Thursday's regular monthly meeting of the council, shortly after Lansford Cunningham, public cleansing inspector for Hanover, reported that the NSWMA had been doing an "excellent job in the parish".
SIX MONTH GARBAGE PILE-UP
Mayor Lester Crooks and his colleagues were quick to counter this claim, citing the dirty state of Lucea and other towns in the parish, giving rise to fears of disease outbreaks such as leptospirosis.
"There is a site with garbage in Hopewell for the past six months, which is a disgrace!" declared the mayor angrily.
Mr. Cunningham faced more criticisms when he stated that garbage had not been collected because the contractor's truck had 'broken down'.
However, the councillors were pleased with the performance of the Social Development Commission (SDC) in the parish. Mr. Crooks and Lloyd Hill, councillor of the Sandy Bay division, expressed satisfaction with the work of the Hanover SDC. They were particularly happy with the number of training programmes the SDC had facilitated, especially in 2005.
"I want to publicly commend the SDC officers for their initiatives," said Councillor Hill.
The mayor noted that based on the SDC officers' proficiency in the parish, he was willing to provide financial assistance to the other training programmes the agency was spearheading.
