UWI Notebook - ONLINE BANNER SYSTEM

The University of the West Indies (UWI) has implemented a new Student Administration System, which will simplify and streamline administrative, processes and procedures, include all categories of students and all areas of student administration.

This interactive online system will allow students to register, request academic approval for courses selected, request course overrides, make adjustments to registration of add/drop courses, check financial information and keep track of their progress toward the completion of their degree using Curriculum, Advising and Programme Planning.

They will also be able to view registration, access information on courses offered, credit weights, pre/co-requisites, course descriptions, update contact information and do 'what-if' scenarios that would show the implications of a change of major/programme to additional credits/courses required.

In order to access the system go to the UWI Mona home page at http://www.mona.uwi.edu/. Click on 'Online Systems', then go to Registration System: Student' or directly to the website at http://srs.uwimona. edu.jm:1104.

Application forms for the 2006/2007 academic year will be processed in the new system effective November 2005. In January 2006, students will complete the Semester Two registration and add/drop in the new system. Students will also be able to view Semester One examination results, financial information and registration information.

ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL PARTNERS WITH UNESCO

Shari Grant, a final year Master of Architecture student, has emerged winner of the inaugural Nadine Isaacs Memorial Design Competition for a mobile health clinic for Jamaica.

The competition was conducted by the Caribbean School of Architecture (CSA), University of Technology, among its first and second-year Master of Architecture students between September and November 2005.

However, given the high quality of the entries, the judges agreed to award two honourable mentions in the competition - to Conrad Jackson and Leon McNeil.

"It was a difficult decision for the judges," said Mark Taylor, design studio tutor in the CSA. "All of the entrants responded in extremely creative ways to the challenge of the design problem."

The purpose of the mobile clinic is to bring testing services for chronic diseases such as HIV, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure to those who otherwise would have difficulty in accessing health care. The competition was launched as part of UTech's HIV/AIDS education programme in 2005.
