SCARBOROUGH, CMC:
LEFT-ARM CHINAMAN bowler Dave Mohammed brightened up a gloomy afternoon for title-chasing Trinidad & Tobago, when he grabbed two wickets on a rain-shortened opening day in their Carib Beer Series match against Windward Islands yesterday.
Mohammed snared the wickets of Devon Smith for 28 and fellow opener Rommel Currency for 15, as the Windwards, having their first bit of competitive action in two weeks reached 48 for two before bad light stopped play one over at Shaw Park.
Mohammed has figures of two wickets for four runs from three overs, after heavy overnight rain, and a waterlogged outfield allowed only 25 overs.
Needing the maximum amount of play in their bid for full points and to assure themselves of a semifinal berth, T&T was dealt a severe blow by the unseasonal weather pattern which left the outfield in a soggy condition.
Umpires Hayden Bruce of T&T and Clive Duncan of Guyana made four inspections of the pitch and outfield before deciding play should start about 1-1/4 hours after the scheduled tea break.
Windwards had a useful start of 43 for the first wicket, but when Mohammed was introduced, Smith was caught at mid-wicket, when his mistimed hit landed straight into the hands of Sherwin Ganga.
