Jamaicans abroad need to vote
published: Friday | February 3, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I LIVE overseas, yet my vote is in Jamaica. I return to Jamaica to vote for elections. My voter's ID says it is valid for the 2007 election, yet your article states that persons not verified by May 2006 will not be placed on the voters' list for the next election. Does that mean that I will be denied my consitutional right to vote even though I carry a valid voter's ID issued by the state. A system must be in place to facilitate Jamaicans living overseas who would like to take part in choosing the next party to lead Jamaica. Without such a system the government will be treating the so-called diaspora as bastard stepchildren who are only good when they get famous or give money towards Jamaica and its problems. We want a voice and a vote in the system.

I am, etc.,
