Government's plans watered down
published: Monday | February 6, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THERE IS much talk from both political parties in regards to development of the inner cities and particularly the Corporate Area of Kingston and St. Andrew.

As desirous as these plans are, unless the people living in these areas develop a new mindset to turn their lives around and seek the God of love and peace, it is going to be the same old story of rundown houses, garbage thrown all around, and all the other habits that lead to creating a ghetto.

The inner city is not Jamaica. There are rural areas that need development, which are the backbone of this country. The landless young men living in deep rural areas need land and roads to get to these lands.

Too many young people are discouraged with Government's sometime gorgeous plans which are watered down before they even get started. A good example is the drainage for Great Bay and Treasure Beach in St. Elizabeth.

CONCERNED RESIDENTS

After the hurricanes of 2005, many families were flooded out in both districts. In August 2005, there was an article in The Gleaner headed 'Government eyes draining St. Bess'. Then November 25, 2005, another article, 'Price tag set on pond repairs St Bess. Price tag $37,000,000.'

However, the Citizens Alert Group of Treasure Beach is advised the amount to be spent is $16,000,000.

The people of Great Bay and especially the young are very concerned. I hope the Hon. Minister of Water and Housing Hon. Donald Buchanan M.P. for the area will explain, why $16,000.000 instead of $37,000,000.'

I am etc.,
