Non-PNPs do matter
published: Thursday | February 9, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE watched the leadership contest in the People's National Party (PNP) for the post of president of the party and ultimately, Prime Minister. On February 25, just under 4,000 élites will decide for the 2.7 million of us, who the next PM will be. How unfortunate! My real concern at this time, however, is that statement Dr. Peter Phillips made recently demanding that all non-Comrades should stay out of PNP business. I have also noticed that the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) is pressing for a national debate among the four contenders and Dr. Phillips has expressed his eagerness to participate so he can show off his academic sharpness.

I wonder if Dr. Phillips considers the PSOJ a Comrade body. The PSOJ is not a known PNP organisation, so why doesn't Dr. Phillips tell them also to stay out of PNP affairs? I believe Dr. Phillips is hoping to gain some political mileage from the debate by displaying his mental abilities. I wish to let Dr. Phillips know that his academic achievements alone won't swing him into the driver's seat.

The fundamentals of good governance are based on giving the people what they want, delivering the promises you've made to them and finally, having a heart of passion for your people. If Dr. Phillips really wants non-PNPs to stay out of its affairs, then I think he should expressly communicate the same to the members of the PSOJ. Dr. Phillips, you can't have your cake and eat it.

I am etc.,
