Save our children

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM OVERLY CONCERNED about the rapid increase of violence among students in schools, as well as the number of little boys who roam the streets during school time and at nights, begging at fast-food outlets. The support for children's rights continues to come from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), but until we tackle the root cause of our children's problems, no amount of cash or motor vehicles can save them.
Too many of our children are left on their own without any form of proper supervision. Some children are disgruntled with their parents and so they think the only way to vent their feelings is to do the opposite of what is expected of them. If our parents were more responsible then there would be no need for any place of safety. The problems that these innocent children experience are common and widespread, so the intervention method must be sufficient for the problem.
Too many of our prospective MPs, pastors, cricketers, managers, teachers and other able leaders are on the street and are placed at another home of safety. I trust that the public and private sectors will continue to work with the Child Development Agency (CDA) in providing the necessary funds to help educate those parents who are guilty of not even trying to show love and respect to their own children and to encourage those who are making the effort, though they sometimes fail. Key agencies, continue the struggle - you will get there.
I am, etc.,
