PROFILE - GPS Group

THE GLOBAL Positioning Systems (GPS) Group was launched at the Physics Department in 1999. Dr. Joseph Skobla is the group's supervisor; he is also senior lecturer and head of the Department of Physics at the University. He has done research on intelligent distributed protection systems, signal processing and intelligent transportation at various institutions here and abroad.

Eight persons have since gained or are in the process of gaining their Mphil's, researching new and emerging technologies relating to GPS such as Differential GPS, real time kinematic GPS, and wireless communication technologies GSM, and GPRS. Most members of the group have highly technical backgrounds in electronics, computer science and classical physics.

The current members of the group are working on various error correction techniques for the University of the West Indies - Cellular Based Error Correction System (UWI-CBECS).

The goals of the project are to improve the accuracy of GPS systems for navigation and tracking in Jamaica while providing the framework for islandwide coverage.
