Santos, Maverley in top-ranking battle
published: Saturday | February 18, 2006

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

Second-placed Santos take on fifth-placed Maverley/ Hughenden at the Bell Chung Stadium in the feature game of the Jamaica National/KSAFA Super League.

In other games, Bull Bay host August Town at the Bull Pen; Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) versus Police National at Up Park Camp; Shortwood entertain Meadhaven United at Shortwood College; Greenwich Town travel to Mountain View United and Barbican tackle Rae Town at Barbican. All matches are set to kick-off at 3:30p.m.

In a tight Super League table, only three points separate first place team Meadhaven from fifth-placed Maverley/Hughenden.

Santos, fresh from their 1-0 win over Greenwich Town last week, are on 22 points and will be seeking win number seven at the expense of Maverley. But Maverley, on 21 points, won't be easy pushovers and will be determined to leapfrog their opponents. The last time both teams met the game finished 0-0.

Meadhaven should continue winning

Leaders Meadhaven on 24 points should continue their winning ways against a Shortwood team rooted to the bottom of the table on four points from 12 games.

The youthful David Hunt-coached Meadhaven, which scored an impressive 2-0 win over JDF last week, should secure their league-topping eighth win of the season from 13 games. In their fist meeting on November 12, 2005, Meadhaven blanked Shortwood 2-0 at home.

Third place August Town have a difficult away game against the dangerous, but sleeping Bull Bay aggregation and could repeat their first round 2-0 win. August Town, on 21 points, are eight clear of Bull Bay on 13 in eighth position and should find a more dangerous team at the Bull Pen.

The marching men of the JDF will attempt an ambush of Police National at Up Park Camp in a battle between the fourth and sixth place teams.

Police National on 21 points are four ahead of the JDF and both will want to break the deadlock after playing to a 0-0 in round two of the competition.

The Mountain View/Barbican clash is up for grabs and could go any way. Mountain View are seventh position on 15 points, four ahead of ninth place Greenwich Town. The last time they met it ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Barbican in 10th position should use home advantage and secure their second win of the season over Rae Town. In the second round, Barbican scored an away 2-0 win and should confirm their superiority.
