Further delays for Whitewater sewerage
published: Monday | February 27, 2006

CAN-CARA DEVELOPMENT Company, which is responsible for the Whitewater Meadows Development in St. Catherine, has stated that it has privately funded the water and sewerage facilities for the community and has been ready to provide service for the past year.

Can-Cara said on Friday, however, that it has been unable to supply the service to the Whitewater Meadows homeowners as it needs approval from the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) on the rates to be charged to residents who will be utilising these services.

The development company said that until the OUR provides the agreed tariff, it would be illegal for them to charge residents for services and, as a result, its pumps have never been turned on. Consequently hundreds of millions of dollars are tied up in these facilities, which are urgently needed by residents in the Whitewater scheme.

They added that the provision of water and sewerage facilities has traditionally been the responsibility of the National Water Commission and other government-related agencies.

Can-Cara was responding to recent demonstrations from residents of the Whitewater development.
