PROFILE - Professor Omkar Parshad

DR. OMKAR Parshad, professor of Endocrinology in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences (physiology section) of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of The West Indies, was born on August 3, 1944, in the state of Punjab, India. He holds a B.Sc. in veterinary science and animal husbandry, M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in physiology from the Punjab Agricultural University, India.

He started his academic career in 1973 as a post-doctoral research fellow, then assistant lecturer at Punjab Agricultural University till 1980 when he joined the staff of the University of the West Indies as lecturer in the Department of Physiology.

Professor Parshad has been teaching physiology to students at undergraduate and postgraduate level for the last 33 years spanning physiological chemistry, cardiovascular, respiratory, reproductive, endocrinology, renal and body fluid physiology.

Professor Parshad has been a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship in 1993 and has been actively engaged in various research projects funded by the government and university agencies in Jamaica and India. He has published over 60 professional papers, book chapters and monographs, and is associate editor of a book Brain Function, Behaviour, Drugs and Disease: Neurosciences in the Caribbean. In addition, he has participated and presented papers in 50 national and international conferences and workshops.
