THE EDITOR, Sir:
THIS IS an open letter to the Member of Parliament for Central St. Catherine and Councillor for the Delavega City Division, Mrs. Sharon Hay-Webster and Mr. Enos 'Ned' Lawrence, respectively.
Dear Mrs. Hay-Webster and Mr. Lawrence:
It is with great concern that I write an open letter to you both on the matter of the painting of portraits of the late Donovan 'Bulbie' Bennett, on signs located at the entrances to the community of Delavega City, apparently by members of the 'Clansman' gang.
I am stunned by the fact that welcome words on the concrete signs located at the entrances to the community are being replaced by a portrait of one who was fingered as Jamaica's most wanted criminal. The sign which was built by the citizens' association to welcome visitors to the community is now being used to highlight a criminal as a community 'hero'. 'Bulbie' has never lived in Delavega City; he has never contributed positively to the social and economical development of the community, so why are his portraits being allowed to be painted all over the community?
Majority of the residents of Delavega City are decent, law-abiding citizens.
I am one of them who is a resident of Delavega City for many years, and I am disturbed by the fact that the community is allowed to be overridden by a few hooligans who have indirectly held the majority of us law-abiding citizens at ransom.
THE GUN
What is even worse, is the fact that these uneducated, unscrupulous, coward criminals do not own a home or even live in the community, but they use their power vested in their guns to intimidate and keep silent the majority of us decent law-biding citizens of the community.
I am beginning now to question the real purpose of our elected political representatives both the local government and central government levels. I would like to find out from both Mrs. Hay-Webster and Mr. Lawrence as to what purpose they serve to protect the majority of the residents of Delavega City who are being held captive by a few criminals.
These criminals are bent on tearing apart the fabric of law and order in the community and have indirectly forced several high-calibre homeowners to either sell or rent their houses and relocate elsewhere, where living is more worthwhile.
I have always exercised my rights to vote for persons in whom I put my confidence to represent me and my community, both at the parish council and central government levels, but it is obvious that you are not suitable representatives. You have not represented the community well in governance.
I am convinced that you do not have the interest of the community at heart.
Dare I vote again in another election if your names appear on the ballots representing the People's National Party. I would, however, if one like Heather Robinson is put forward to represent me and my community. I praise her for her courage. I believe that both of you shoud tender your resignations as Member of Parliament and Councillor for the community in the interest of the people.
I am, etc.,
CONCERNED CITIZEN
OF DELAVEGA CITY
